RE: Making Ladder Golf Game

Thanks everyone for you responses.
I thought about buying one from Walmart, but I think I can build a better quality one for about the same amount of money. Especially since I have most of the pvc pipe just taking up space in the garage...

Making Ladder Golf Game

I would like to make this game for the family. Making the ladders is pretty straight forward, but I'm not sure of the best way to make the bolo balls. What have other people done? What seems to work the best?
Thanks,

RE: margarita's

I find that all the pre-made mixes out there are overly and artificially too sweet, so this is what I have been doing for the last two years:
Make the mix at home
Make a simple syrup using 1 part water to 2 parts sugar. Place in a sauce pan and heat over medium heat until all the sugar has dissolved. Set aside. When syrup had cooled to room temperature, mix in equal amount of lime juice, if you have two cups of simple syrup add two cups lime juice.
Using fresh lime juice is best, but can be expensive and time consuming so I find bottled lime juice acceptable.
At the campground make the drinks to order:
Wife prefers the sweeter version:
Fill large glass with ice
1 1/2 shots of tequila
3 shots of mix
top off with a splash of water
mix well
I prefer the stiffer version:
Fill large glass with ice
2 1/2 shots of tequila
1 1/2 shots of mix
top off with a splash of water
mix well
For other variations, you can replace up to 2/3 of the lime juice with a fruit puree, strawberries, mango's and watermelon works very well.

RE: Water Heater Issue

Guess I was an idiot.
They bypass valve was open, not sure how I missed that.
I won't be making that mistake again.
Thanks you all again,

Water Heater Issue

This weekend we went on our first camp out of the year, and of course one problem surfaced.
I turned on the electric element for the water heater and when I checked the water a couple hours later and I still had cool water. So, I turned the gas on and waited another hour or so. This time when I checked I had hot water for about 15 seconds then cold water. This continued to happen all weekend, about 15 seconds of hot water then cold water.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm lost...

RE: Cooking Sous Vide

Eric have you tried this method(sous vide) also? Did you find it as easy and delicious as I?
Christine
Christine - I have yet to try the technique, but have seen it being used on TV (Top Chef, ICA, etc...) and read about it quite bit in the last year or so.
The reason I haven't tried, is because I have not been about able to get over the presentation of the food cooked this way. It always looks pale, like it was poached and I generally don't care for the texture of poached food.
But you have given me some great ideas here, and I might play around with this in the near future. I never thought about using the crock-pot, or using this as a 'make ahead meal' for camping. It may also be a way to get some good eat at hunting camp this November.

RE: Cooking Sous Vide

If you don't have a moist setting on your vacuum sealer, there are a couple ways you can still do this.
First, if you plan on freezing you can freeze your items first. Then the marinade become a solid and will not be sucked up into your sealer.
Second, you can place a folded paper towel inside the bag which will absorb the liquid before getting sucked into the sealer. You will probably need to add more liquid than normal, to make up for the liquid that is in the paper towel.
I'm not sure that just sealing the bag would achieve the same results. I believe that this style of cooking is dependent upon the vacuum pressure.
I would also recommend pre-heating the water before putting it into your crock-pot, otherwise I would imagine that it would take a long time for it to come up to temperature.

Last dump of the season

We are leaving for our last camp of the year tomorrow, and I have a question about my black tank.
Through the summer after I dumped, I added about 3 gallons back into the black tank to keep the smells down. When do my final dump for the season this weekend, do I still want to add water to my tank? Or, do I want to leave it dry for winter storage? (I live in Minnesota, and although the last couple of winters have been relatively warm, it does freeze up here :) )
I'm thinking that I should add a couple gallons water, and then when I winterize add about a quart of antifreeze. Is my thinking correct here?
Thanks,
